Privacy Policy

Last updated 31 October 2026. Braintasia sends you facts about topics you pick. To do that we need a little information about you, and this page says exactly what, why and for how long.

The short version

  • We keep what's needed to send your facts: your name, email, topics, delivery times and the devices you get notifications on.
  • We never sell your information, and we don't share it with advertisers.
  • Facts are written by AI (Google Gemini). It's sent topic names and help questions, never your name or email.
  • Closing your account deletes your account and everything tied to it.

Who we are

Braintasia (braintasia.com) is run by Don Duncan in the United States. Questions about this policy or your data go to support@braintasia.com.

What we collect

Your account. Your first and last name, email address and password. Passwords are stored only as a secure hash, so nobody can read them, us included. We also keep when the account was created and when you last signed in, and the IP address used for each, to help spot misuse and troubleshoot sign-in problems.

Your topics and settings. The topics you follow, how often and when you want facts, your fact tuning choices, and your time zone, which is read from your browser so facts arrive in your waking hours.

Your devices. If you turn on notifications we store what's needed to reach that device: a browser push subscription, or for the Android app a notification token, a device id and the phone's model name, which you can rename in Device Settings.

What you do on the site. The facts sent to you, your thumbs up and down (which make up your Favourites), quiz answers, True or false guesses, and some simple counts, such as when you open a fact from an email or a notification, or click a gift or book link.

Where you came from. On your first visit we note the link or campaign that brought you (for example a Facebook post) and the page you landed on, so we know which ways of finding us work. It's kept in a cookie for 60 days and saved with your account if you sign up.

Emails we've sent you. We keep a copy of each email we send you, so we can fix delivery problems and avoid sending the same thing twice.

What we don't collect. No phone number, no address, no location, no contacts and no payment details. Apart from the sign-up and last sign-in IP addresses above and password reset requests below, we don't store IP addresses in our database. Our web server keeps standard access logs (IP address, page and browser) for a short time, for security and troubleshooting.

Password reset requests. When someone asks for a password reset link, we note the IP address, the browser and whether a link was sent, to spot misuse such as someone requesting links for accounts that aren't theirs. We don't keep the email address that was typed; if it belongs to an account, the record is linked to that account. These records are deleted after 12 months, or sooner if the account is closed.

How we use it

  • To run the service: pick, write and deliver your facts at random times inside the hours you chose.
  • To make your facts better: your votes and fact tuning steer which facts you get.
  • To email you: account emails (verification, password reset, email changes), fact emails for topics set to email, and a few extras such as tips after signing up, a monthly recap and a weekly True or false challenge.
  • To keep the site safe: rate limits and spam checks on sign up, sign in, password resets and the help chat.
  • To improve Braintasia: counts of what's used, so we know what to build next.

AI and the services that help us

We use a few outside services to run the site. Each gets only what it needs:

  • Google Gemini writes the facts, quiz questions and help chat answers. It's sent topic names, earlier facts on that topic, and the questions you type into the help chat, never your name or email.
  • Cloudflare Workers AI draws some topic pictures from the topic's name.
  • Google reCAPTCHA checks for bots on sign up, sign in, password resets, the help chat and trying a fact. Google receives your IP address and browser details for this check.
  • Google Analytics counts visits and pages on braintasia.com using cookies.
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) and your browser's own push service (Google, Mozilla or Apple) deliver notifications. They receive the fact being sent.
  • An email delivery service sends our emails. It receives your email address and the email itself.
  • Amazon. Gift and book links go to Amazon. Once you're on Amazon, its own privacy policy applies.
  • Ko-fi. The tip jar is a link to Ko-fi. If you leave a tip, Ko-fi handles the payment, and we never see your card details.

Our daily Fact Bomb is posted to Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Bluesky, YouTube and TikTok. Those posts contain only the public fact, never anything about you. Share buttons are plain links: nothing is sent to a social network unless you click one.

Cookies and browser storage

  • Session cookie: keeps you signed in and remembers things during a visit, such as the facts you tried as a guest. It ends when you close your browser.
  • bt_src: the first-visit source described above, kept for 60 days.
  • uname and keep-logged: set only if you tick "Remember my email" when signing in.
  • Google Analytics and reCAPTCHA set their own cookies.
  • A few small settings are kept in your browser's storage, such as whether the Fact Bomb is folded.

You can block or clear cookies in your browser. Braintasia will still work, but you'll need to sign in each visit.

What's public

Your account, topics and votes are private. When three or more people add the same topic, that topic and its facts become a public topic page, but nothing shows who added it.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while you have an account. If an account goes quiet for about 90 days, we email to ask whether you still want facts, and pause them if we don't hear back. Your account stays until you close it.

Closing your account (Settings, then Close account) permanently deletes your account, topics, settings, devices, votes, quiz answers, sign-in tokens, activity records and the emails we kept. A few records that aren't linked to your name or email, such as True or false guesses, help chat questions and anonymous click counts, may remain in our logs. Facts and public topic pages stay, because they're shared by everyone.

Your choices

  • See and change your details in User Settings, and your topics and delivery times on Your Topics.
  • Stop emails: every email has a link to stop that kind of email, and topics can be paused or switched to notifications at any time.
  • Turn off notifications in your browser or phone settings, or remove a device in Device Settings.
  • Get a copy or delete your data: close your account yourself, or email support@braintasia.com and we'll send you a copy or delete it within 30 days.

These choices are open to everyone, wherever you live. If you're in the EU, UK or a US state with a privacy law, they also cover your legal rights to access, correct, delete and move your data, and to object to its use. We don't sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising.

Children

Braintasia is for everyone 13 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think a child has signed up, email us and we'll delete the account.

Security

The whole site uses HTTPS, passwords are hashed, and links in our emails are signed so they can't be guessed. No system is perfect, so please use a password you don't use anywhere else.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If the change is important, we'll also tell members by email before it takes effect.
